To help mitigate these threats, companies create business continuity plans. In a risk assessment, you try to think of all possible business continuity threats and attempt to devise a plan to get the business up and running again as soon as possible should one of these threats occur. - Cyber Attacks: Cyber attacks are one of the most potent threats business face. According to AZ Business Magazine, there were a number of a high-profile businesses throughout the world that fell victim to cyber attacks in 2015. As a result, in 2016, the Business Continuity Institute ranked cyber attacks the number one threat to business continuity. Businesses must have a plan to defend against and mitigate the effects of this threat.
- Blackouts: Is your building secure in the event of a prolonged blackout? Ideally, you’ll have a generator on site to keep the company running, but are you prepared for a scenario in which the power is out for days? According to Preparis, if some of your data is stored outside the office, you’ll need a plan in place to ensure it’s secure.
- Influenza: A flu outbreak in your office could have a huge impact on productivity. In the event of an influenza outbreak, you should have plan in place for “working with a depleted workforce.” You should also take steps to prevent a flu outbreak. Some of the best things you can do is encourage employees to stay home when they don’t feel well and to ensure there are enough alcohol-based hand sanitizers around the office.
- Winter Storms: What happens if a huge winter storm drops three feet of snow on your area? You can’t just close the office for days. Your business continuity plan should include a way for at least some of your employees to telecommute. This way your business is still up running even though some employees can’t make it into the office.
- Earthquakes: A major earthquake can occur almost anywhere in the United States. In fact, more than forty-five states have at least some risk of earthquake. The individual risk to your property can be assessed by analyzing your structures exposure, hazard and vulnerability to an earthquake. Just to be safe, you should conduct regular earthquake drills with your employees.
- Floods: Flooding is an extremely common natural disaster, but you don’t need to live near a river or ocean for flooding to be a risk to your business. Flooding can be caused by a broken sprinkler or other plumbing issue. To mitigate this risk, a good business continuity plan will ensure your data and documents are backed up.
- Tornado: Tornados are a common natural disaster particularly in the Southeast and Midwest. Your employees must know where to go in the event of a tornado. This is particularly important for businesses in high-rise buildings.
- Workplace Violence: Unfortunately, the threat of an active shooter situation has become a common fear in contemporary American society. Tour employees must know exactly what you expect them to do in the event of an active shooter situation. Be sure to train your employees on what to do if a gunman enters the building. Also, stage active shooter drills so employees are familiar with the procedure.
