Image-Based Backup Is Incredible (not your momma’s backup)
Image-based backup has many benefits over traditional file-level backup
We all know and love the good old file-level backup. It’s been around forever and is really good for backing up and restoring individual files. That’s great assuming you’ll only ever need to restore files, but let’s consider what would happen if you lost an entire server due to catastrophic hardware failure or your entire server room due to a power outage. According to a recent report published jointly by Continuity Insights and KPMG, 51% of the respondents experienced an interruption due to a power outage and 31% experienced downtime due to hardware failure. How long would it take you to recover the failed system if you had to re-install and configure the operating system and applications on new hardware and then restore all of the files? In the event of a power outage, can you restore to the cloud to keep your business running?
With an image-based backup solution such as Datto NAS systems, you gain the ability to not only restore lost files but also recover failed systems. This is because an image-based backup is a snapshot of the entire system at a point in time. If you need to restore only a few files, no problem, Datto can do that. If the entire system crashes Datto can also restore the image backup to new hardware or even to a virtual server in the cloud if hardware isn’t available. This saves you time and money and gets your business back up and running faster.
It is true that the initial backup can take longer when using an image-based backup solution versus a file-level solution; however, the benefits far outweigh this and it can run in the background with minimal impact on the server. Once the initial backup is complete future jobs capture only changes to the system and files, thus taking much less time to complete.
