Cloud Computing For Dummies: Not Just For Dummies Anymore

Heard all the hype surrounding cloud computing? Not sure exactly how it works? We’re here to help. This guide will serve as a “cloud computing for dummies.” We’re sure you have a few questions about this new generation of computing, and hopefully they will all be answered. Here are four commonly asked questions!

  1. What is cloud computing, in simple terms? Cloud computing is a way of using your computer and storing data (files, music, videos, pictures, etc.) in a place other than just your computer and its hard drive. Essentially, it’s computing where you do not need to worry about running out of space, or maintaining the device in which you store your files. The files are stored in data centers elsewhere, and maintained by the company.
  2. How can I know it’s safe and secure? Hopefully you’ve asked yourself this question, since you should be protective over your data. The levels of protection and security will be different with each cloud provider, but generally speaking, storing data on the cloud is completely safe. Data should be encrypted and password protected, meaning you control who knows how to get your things! Most data centers also have ways of recovering data if it’s ever lost. Don’t be afraid to ask the company if they have these means of protection, if it is not stated on their website.
  3. How much will it cost? This is a very broad question. As with many things, there are several plans to choose from. Your price can range depending on how much data space you want/need. For the typical person, it is a very affordable way to keep your files safe.
  4. Is it difficult to switch to cloud computing? Most users who have switched over to cloud computing have experienced an easy, seamless transition. Very few people need any IT support to help them with the process. You also shouldn’t have to upgrade any hardware (routers, modems, laptops, desktops) as long as it is somewhat recent and works well now.
