The silly man who declared “I don’t need to backup my PC”

Why do I need to backup my PC?

One fine spring morning, a young bright-eyed dreamer of a man named Fred decided he would find a way to bring happiness and joy to all around him. That ultimately failed, so he open his own business instead. This man, like so many others, relied heavily on his computer for the business to run smoothly. It was the hub on all sorts of wonderful information! Client names and addresses, orders and receipts, contact information for associates, the number of a really good sandwich shop that delivers for those late nights, the list goes on.

One night, after Fred had finished his sandwich, something caught his eye. “Backup my PC” it said, “Never lose important information”. Fred thought this was silly. “I’m a young hotshot with everything to prove, and my spirits are uncrushably high!” he believed. “I don’t need to back up my PC!” and he simply ignored the beautifully crafted ad. He went home that night with a song in his heart, and a skip in his step. Little did he know that the storm was on its way, heading right for the business Fred had built himself! The rain came down like a shower of bullets, and the wind howled like a dog that really wanted to howl about something! Thunder and lightning crashed across the dark sky, and a stray bolt found its target, and struck the town’s power plant, shutting down the grid for only a few seconds. The storm passed quickly, and the next day it was largely forgotten. At least, until Fred checked his computer. For you see, as a time saver, Fred left his computer on during the night, so that he could simply log in when he arrived at work. Today however, there was nothing there. No address, no clients, no associates, nothing. He wanted a sandwich to console himself, but that too was lost to the wrath of the storm.

Turns out, a simple automatic PC update was going on at the time of the storm, and when power was lost, so was all his work. Fred quickly lost the business, and his only means of income. His wife left him, taking the kids. Fred couldn’t hold down a steady job after that. He turned to the bottle, but it didn’t help. Finally, in the winter of 2014, they found him. As per his will, his marker reads “If I could do it all again, I would backup my PC”. It is too late for Fred and his business of buying and selling used beards, but not for you dear reader.
